Hello, today I have Mike Hernandez from Trilogy Financial Services in Los Angeles to speak about how you can plan your finances in order to buy a home with your retirement money. A lot of people dip in to their retirement funds to buy homes, so we're going to share some tips and tricks with you if you're preparing to do this.
  1. Build a Budget: This is where you have to start, and might be the most important part of this entire process. The first thing you need to know are what your actual expenses are. You will need to know your finances very well, because you will have a drastic change with where your dollars are going once you have a mortgage and a retirement fund to take care of.
  2. Planning for Retirement: Once you're in your new home, you can't lose sight of retirement. Your monthly mortgage payments will be a little more significant than paying rent, so you need to know how much money you have to put aside to pay your mortgage and how much you need to save up for a nice retirement.
  3. Mortgage Interest Reductions: When you purchase a home, your taxes will be adjusted accordingly. One way you can come up with a little extra cash is for you to adjust your W-2 to get more money before taxes. Instead of a big tax refund in April or May, you will get more money week to week. This will put more money in your pocket and give less to Uncle Sam, because you might not see that money again and it will not earn interest. Instead of getting a big break at the end of the year, stretch out your income for a more manageable way to pay your bills week to week.
The most important thing to understand is your current financial situation. If you need to, get the assistance of a professional to help you develop a road map in order for you to develop a strategy for long-term stability.
